Today's Quote

“Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever... it remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.”

Convergence

Today's Quote

“To me, photography is an art of observation. It's about finding something interesting in an ordinary place... I've found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.”

~ Elliott Erwitt

Today's Quote

I've worked out of a series of no's. No to exquisite light, no to apparent compositions, no to the seduction of poses or narrative. And all these no's force me to the "yes." I have a white background. I have the person I'm interested in and the thing that happens between us.
~ Richard Avedon - 1994

Today's Quote

"Among the models I photograph for the fashion magazines, I recognize immediately the ones that have studied dance. They know how to carry their heads, they have a certain way of sitting and a natural elegance that the mastery of their bodies has shaped forever."

Today's Quote

"Adventure is not only measured in kilometres. Strong emotions are not only found in front of the Parthenon. Emotion, if you are worthy of it, will be felt before the smile of a child returning home with his school books, a tulip in a vase touched by a ray of sunlight, or the face of a beloved woman."

Angus

It was one year ago that we were in Australia. Thanks to our friend Nadine, we had the opportunity of meeting Sue and Angus ...... who turned out to be great hosts, guides ..... and a year later ..... still friends. The above photo is one of my favorite portraits (even if Angus thinks he looks a bit old).

Today's Quote

"There are two kinds of photographers: those who compose pictures and those who take them. The former work in studios. For the latter, the studio is the world. . . . For them, the ordinary doesn't exist: every thing in life is a source of nourishment."
~ Ernst Haas

Glass

The Lighthouse Lens
CAPE Otway Lightstation is the oldest, surviving lighthouse in mainland Australia and is located on the Great Ocean Road. The light, which has been in continuous operation since 1848, is perched on towering sea cliffs where Bass Strait and the Southern Ocean collide. For thousands of immigrants, after many months at sea, Cape Otway was their first sight of land after leaving Europe.

It is not something physical."

Australia's Great Ocean Road

London Arch
The Great Ocean Road is considered to be one of the most beautiful travel spots on the planet (The Great Barrier Reef is ranked No. 1). It is a 273km stretch of road along the South Eastern coast of Australia between the Victorian cities of Torquay and Warrnambool. The road was constructed as a Memorial to those killed in the First World War.
Just beyond the amazing Twelve Apostles is London Arch (formerly known as London Bridge before the very recent collapse of land section).

Barefoot

The Bay of Fundy is a bay on the Atlantic coast of North America, on the northeast end of the Gulf of Maine between the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, with a small portion touching the U.S. state of Maine. The Bay of Fundy is known for its high tidal range and the bay is contested as having the highest vertical tidal range in the world with Ungava Bay in northern Quebec and The Severn Estuary in the UK. Columbia River Gorge

Multnomah Falls
drops in two major steps, split into an upper falls of 542 feet (165 m) and a lower falls of 69 feet (21 m), with a gradual 9 foot (3 m) drop in elevation between the two, so the total height of the waterfall is conventionally given as 620 feet (189 m). Multnomah Falls is the second tallest year-round waterfall in the United States after Yosemite Falls. However, Yosmemite Falls does not flow during late summer and autumn in years of low snowfall, so Multnomah Falls can be considered the tallest permanent waterfall in the United States.

Today's Quote . . . .

"I don’t believe you can see what’s beyond the edge unless you put your head over it; I’ve many times been right up to the precipice, not even a foot or an inch away. That’s the only place to be if you’re going to see and show what suffering really means."

Today's Quote . . . .

"You become things, you become an atmosphere, and if you become it, which means you incorporate it within you, you can also give it back. You can put this feeling into a picture. A painter can do it. And a musician can do it and I think a photographer can do that too, and that I would call dreaming with open eyes."
~ Ernst Haas (1921-1986)

Today's Quote . . . .

"The strong desire to take pictures is important. It borders on a need, based on a habit: the habit of seeing. Whether working or not, photographers are looking, seeing, and thinking about what they see, a habit that is both a pleasure and a problem, for we seldom capture in a single photograph the full expression of what we see and feel. It is the hope that we might express ourselves fully -- and the evidence that other photographers have done so -- that keep us taking pictures."
~ Sam Abell (1945-)

Shadow of Cathedral Rock

Most photographers take photos of Cathedral Rock . . . a world famous landmark. This image captures the shadow cast as the sun burst through the overcast sky lighting up the Sedona valley.

Hiking to Cathedral Rock

Cynthia and I spent several weeks in Sedona in October 2004. Our first major hike was climbing to the top of Cathedral Rock.
The weather was overcast for much of the hike . . . . but as the sun began to set, the rays went below the cloud layer and began to light up the valley . . . as you will see in the next image.

A new path to take . . .

After posting photos from our last two adventures from Lac Clair and Italy, I have decided to change the way I do my daily post. Instead of doing a chronology of one complete trip, I will start posting my best photos from all the different locations we have visited. Hope you like the new format. Please feel free to write if you have any suggestions. :)

Today's Quote . . . .

"I get on well with ordinary people. We talk. We start with the weather, and little by little we get to the important things. When I photograph them it is not as if I were examining them with a magnifying glass, like a cold and scientific observer. It's very brotherly. And it's better, isn't it, to shed some light on those people who are never in the limelight?"
~ Robert Doisneau (1912-1994)
